Peruvian Society of Urban Planners
Creating Alternatives for
Sustainable Urban Development
Who are we?
The Peruvian Society of Urban
Planners (SURP) is a non-profit organisation that groups
professional urban planners or those with master's degrees in
urban-related issues within the territory of Peru.
SURP is an autonomous legal
entity of internal public law, with its own legal capacity and
assets, created in 1997, inscribed in the
public registry and based in the city of Lima, which follows
the country's political constitution, its statutes, and its
regulations.
Our Vision
"We strive for a country
whose cities grow in harmony with its environment and rural
surroundings, and in which poverty has been overcome. The
Peruvian Society of Urban Planners will be a national force
and partner of choice due to its strong commitment to the
sustainable development of cities."

Our mission is to promote

whilst channeling resources for that very purpose.

Peru.
The Planning Profession
The
Urban Planning career (known simply as "the planning
career" within urban planners' circles) has as its main objective to
prepare able professionals who are capable of facing urban
problems with enough criteria and adequate tools to solve them.
These professionals need to have a solid educational formation
in areas specific to urban planning or sustainable development
in urban systems.
Among the various
disciplines that play a part in the dynamic of a city's
development, the Urban Planner should:
-
be specially suited and
able to assume a role of co-ordination in the planning process, leading
multi-disciplinary teams, identifying needs and possibilities,
proposing objectives and plans capable of materialising
change,
-
mediating between an
issue's various stakeholders,
-
controlling and supervising common proposals according to the
evolution of needs, existing resources and opportunities, and
-
managing and evaluating the effects and implications of the
adopted solutions.
All of this, done from the privileged
position that he or she occupies as befits an urban planner.
The planning profession has received enormous following,
backing, and support in the last decades within the
international community. Depending on the country, we can find a variety of
different titles such as: Urbanist, Urban Planner, Town/City Planner,
among others.
The following is a list of some principal universities,
faculties, and schools that teach urban planning at the
tertiary school level and offer graduate and post-graduate
planning degrees.
